FAA Denies BVLOS Comment Period Extension

By EAA Staff

The FAA has denied an extension to the comment period for its sweeping proposed rule on beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) operations. In a post to the rule’s docket on Monday, September 29, the FAA acknowledged requests for extension to the 60-day comment period from two interested parties, but denied the requests citing the accelerated timeline necessitated by an executive order directing the FAA to establish new rules enabling BVLOS operations.

“On June 6, 2025, the President issued Executive Order 14307, ‘Unleashing American Drone Dominance,’ which instructed FAA to publish a final rule within 240 days, as appropriate. Meeting that deadline will require extraordinary measures that do not make it practicable to extend the comment period or subdivide the NPRM into separate rulemakings,” the FAA wrote in issuing the denial.

The comment period for the proposed rule ends on October 6. See our previous summary of the rule and our concerns for more information, and interested members can comment here.
