By EAA Staff
In a recent video, “MOSAIC and the Future of GA,” posted to their YouTube channel, Rian Johnson, chief technical officer at Van's Aircraft, discusses details of the FAA’s Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) final rule. Announced during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2025, MOSAIC, or Sport Pilot 2.0, expands the privileges of sport pilots and the definition of light-sport aircraft.
In addition to his position at Van’s Aircraft, Johnson also serves as the Chair of ASTM International’s F37 Light Sport Aircraft Committee. This committee is expanding existing standards and drafting new consensus standards related to the design, performance, quality acceptance, and safety monitoring of light-sport aircraft. It is these standards that the FAA accepts as the means of compliance utilized by light-sport aircraft manufacturers. Johnson discusses the MOSAIC Final Rule, offering his unique perspective on the opportunities the new language provides from his position as an aircraft manufacturer and standards developer.
