Comments Open on NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System
NASA has issued a routine notice in the Federal Register requesting public comment on the continued operations of the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) and related Voluntary Safety Reporting System (VSRS). While this notice is NOT an indication that the ASRS is going away or is on the chopping block, this renewal required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1976, occurring every few years, is an opportunity to highlight and support this valuable program.
ASRS has been supporting our aviation community since 1976, giving pilots and aviation professionals a confidential, non-punitive way to report any safety issues. These reports are used to find trends, identify risks, and see system-wide issues that may go undetected without these reporting avenues. In general aviation, where reporting mechanisms are often limited, ASRS provides a necessary opportunity to contribute to the safety of the National Airspace System.
EAA is submitting comments to reinforce the importance of ASRS and to encourage its continued development. Highlights of our comments include:
- Emphasizing strong support for the continued operation and resourcing of ASRS.
- Encouraging NASA to invest in creating modern and user-friendly digital platforms to make participation easier for users.
- Illustrating the importance of confidentiality and data protection, to ensure user trust and system integrity are maintained.
We encourage the aviation community to submit their own comments in support of this essential safety program. This is a great opportunity to show your support for a system that helps us fly in a safer sky. Public comments are being accepted until July 7 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.
